What Gimbap Street Is
Gimcheon is dedicating a roughly 250-meter stretch across from Gimcheon Station to gimbap as its new Gimbap Street. The project is part of the city's effort to transform the Gimbap Festival's viral success into a year-round tourism draw and bring more visitors to its old downtown.
Gimcheon city officials decided to play along with the city's association with Gimbap Cheonguk after a city survey found many people, particularly younger Koreans, associated Gimcheon more with the restaurant chain than the actual city.
What Visitors Will Find
Snack stalls and cafes can participate in the Gimbap Street, along with stores selling gimbap-themed merchandise and souvenirs. The area will feature gimbap-themed murals, a symbolic entrance gate, photo zones and nighttime lighting.
Timing
The city aims to complete the Gimbap Street by year-end. Some elements of the Gimbap Street are expected to be ready ahead of this year's Gimbap Festival, which is slated for Oct. 23-25.
The Festival Behind It
The inaugural Gimcheon Gimbap Festival in 2024 drew more than 100,000 visitors. The festival returned in 2025, drawing some 150,000 visitors.
